Things I will miss about England when I leave Oxford:
- The morris dancers at the pub I live near. I remember a group coming here the day I moved in and my dad getting very excited. Today, there was a similar group outside the pub. With the good weather, I sat half out my window and watched and cheered from afar. They are ADORABLE.

BELIEF & TECHNIQUE FOR MODERN PROSE - Jack Kerouac
1. Scribbled secret notebooks, and wild typewritten pages, for yr own joy 2. Submissive to everything, open, listening 3. Try never get drunk outside yr own house 4. Be in love with yr life 5. Something that you feel will find its own form 6. Be crazy dumbsaint of the mind 7. Blow as deep as you want to blow 8. Write what you want bottomless from bottom of the mind 9. The unspeakable visions of...

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.

– Nicole Krauss, The History of Love
I read this book last January, and today a friend gifted it to me. I remember last time I read it I was inspired to write again for a while, to the point where a friend and I discussed writing novellas. Hopefully rereading it will result in inspiration striking...

Op-Ed Columnist - Our Politics May Be All in Our... →
This is interesting, on some basic level it does make sense (conservatives being sensitive to fear), but I can’t really comment on the science.
One important and interesting point Kristof makes:
“Conservatives may be more responsive to health reform, he suggested, if it is framed as a national security argument. For example, American companies complain about the difficulty of...
my friend on our love of The West Wing
her: and you know what? i think they're healthy crushes. i mean, crushing on the deputy chief of staff and the president's speech writer is acceptable.
you know you’re getting anglicized when you spell it snow ‘plough’ and gmail underlines it in red (or i guess my computer does the underlining?)… but ‘plow’ just has so few letters! lol.
Governor's School cuts foreclose on N.J.'s future... →
End of Governor’s school for public issues. My gov school. I remember the writer of this article coming and speaking to us at gspi. Angered by this decision, more on it later.
of all the random little things I always think I’ll miss about America, USPS is not one of them. Turns out I do (miss USPS that is).
Also, I really like post offices. Random.
The grisly truth about the Super Bowl abortion ad.... →
Being pro-choice and all, I obviously don’t like this ad. But my problem with it is similar to that described in this article. It isn’t just about labels about choice and life - it’s about a distorted message, that if you don’t have an abortion and carry through an extremely risky pregnancy, you will have a child who is a star football player. Obviously, most people...
healthcare. finally.
American healthcare.
I don’t really know where to go after those two words. They have consumed and captivated the interest of the Western world for the past few months.
Why does the rest of the world care so much? What difference does it make if Americans have health care or not? What difference does it make where the system goes?
Honestly? It’s about American exceptionalism. The same...

things that make me happy:
- being on phone with mom, and shopping online for pretty dresses together.
you know how they in silly romantic films they always talk about people all over the world being under the same sky? the internet’s unifying in a similar way.. it’s lovely that we all see the same internet(ish).
This is just so damned cool. I miss work from the summer quite a bit sometimes - it felt good to be doing something that could potentially be making a tangible difference. Maybe one of my lesson plans would inspire a kid. Maybe some research I did would change a teaching method. Maybe an initiative I set up would end in a library in a school.
Oh I’m so idealistic. But education is just...

– Sleep Talkin’ Man
Untitled Poem by Roberto Juarroz
I don’t know how to make a man. Maybe my hands make one while I am asleep and when it’s finished they wake me up, completely, and show it to me.

Councilman under fire for atheism →
I’ve often wondered what religious book atheists are expected to place their hand on as they swear oaths. Doesn’t it make more sense to use a Constitution instead of a Bible? After all, people are pledging to uphold the laws of the land, not biblical laws. The craziest part for me, in this article, was definitely him being called ‘satan’s helper.’ Over...
